INTP-OH: works it out in conversation, and then the conversation ends

Ti wants the model to be correct and Ne keeps producing new branches to check. The O axis means you do not close, and the H axis means all of it happens where people can hear. That makes you a genuinely good person to think with, and it means a large amount of your best work exists only as something you once said in a room.

What INTP-OH actually means

The O axis keeps the model open. There is always another case, another framing, another objection you can already see. Closing feels less like finishing and more like agreeing to stop being careful.

The H axis means the working-out is social. You talk it through, you enjoy the argument, and you change position mid-sentence when someone says something better, without any of the ego cost that most people attach to that.

Ne plus the H axis is a genuinely powerful combination for finding the shape of a problem. Combined with the O axis, it is also a combination with no natural end state.

For accuracy: the A/O and H/C axes come from the APESK 64-type model, which is separate from MBTI. They describe variation within a type, not a second verdict about you. Two separate things get written the same way, so it is worth being explicit: the A and O here are the APESK assertive-and-deliberating axis. They are not the A and T (Assertive and Turbulent) that 16Personalities adds to its own codes. Different model, different axis, same-looking letter.

What it looks like on an ordinary day

The best version of your idea happened verbally, to two people, and was never written down.

You will change your mind in the middle of defending something, which people find either refreshing or infuriating and rarely anything between.

You are the person who reframes the problem in the first ten minutes and then contributes nothing to the implementation, which is not laziness so much as a loss of traction once the interesting part is over.

You enjoy the disagreement itself, and occasionally have to remember that the other person is not enjoying it in the same way.

The recurring cost: an unclosed idea belongs to whoever closed it, and quite often that is not you.

How INTP-OH differs from the other three INTP subtypes

INTP-OH vs INTP-OC. Same deliberating, opposite exposure. OC thinks alone, so their models are cleaner and never get tested. You think in company, so yours get tested constantly and rarely get finished. Both of you end up with very little shipped.

INTP-OH vs INTP-AH. Same exposure, opposite tempo. AH talks it through and then commits. You talk it through and keep the question open. AH gets credit for ideas you both had.

INTP-OH vs INTP-AC. The opposite corner. AC decides quickly and silently and ships. To an AC your process looks like a very long meeting. To you an AC looks like they stopped thinking too early, and occasionally they did.

If you have watched an idea you had first become someone else project, that is not theft. That is the difference between an open model and a closed one.

With other people

You are easy to talk to and hard to pin down. People enjoy your company and often cannot say what you actually think about anything, because you have said eight things about it and meant all of them provisionally.

Fe is your inferior function, so the H axis is doing something effortful rather than automatic. You engage warmly and you are not automatically reading how it lands, which is why an argument you experienced as enjoyable can be experienced by the other person as being taken apart.

The specific failure mode is treating someone distress as a claim to be examined. They were telling you they felt bad; you asked a clarifying question about the premise. Both of you then felt misunderstood, accurately.

Where it costs you, and what helps

The cost is not the openness and not the sociability. It is that neither the O axis nor the H axis contains any mechanism for closing, so the thinking never converts into anything that exists outside the conversation.

The concrete change is to write the state down rather than the conclusion. You will resist writing a conclusion because you do not have one. You can write here is the shape of it so far and the three things I am unsure about, and that artefact is worth far more than the conversation it came from.

The second one is about the other person. Before taking apart what someone said, check once whether they are presenting an argument or telling you something about themselves. You are good enough at distinctions that this one is entirely learnable, and it is the single most common friction this corner produces.

None of this asks you to think less or talk less. It asks for one artefact per idea, which is roughly the difference between having thought about something and having done it.

Common questions

Why do my ideas end up belonging to other people?

Because an idea in conversation is not yet an object, and whoever turns it into one is the person it gets attributed to. The O axis keeps you from closing, and the H axis means the unclosed version is broadcast anyway. That combination is generous and genuinely useful to everyone around you, and it systematically transfers credit. The fix is not to become secretive. It is to produce a small artefact, with the uncertainties written into it, before the conversation ends.

Am I an INTP or an ENTP?

The usual tell is what happens afterwards rather than what happens during. Both enjoy the open exploration; an ENTP leads with Ne and is energised by continuing it, while an INTP leads with Ti and needs quiet afterwards to rebuild the model internally. In practice an INTP-OH looks extroverted in the room and then needs a disproportionate amount of recovery time, and the exploring is in service of getting the internal model right rather than being the point in itself.

What is the difference between INTP-OH and INTP-AH?

They share the sociable, out-loud process and differ on whether it ever closes. An INTP-AH explores and then commits at roughly the point where the model is good enough to act on, which produces visible output and visible errors. An INTP-OH explores and keeps the question open, which produces better thinking and less of anything anyone can point at. Over a year the AH is usually more accurate too, because published work gets corrected by reality.

Is the 64-type model actually evidence-based?

Weakly, and you are probably the audience most likely to want that said directly. The sixteen-type layer descends from Jungian theory via MBTI, which has documented problems with test-retest reliability and with imposing categories on continuous traits. The A/O and H/C axes come from the APESK model, built on a large self-selected online sample rather than a representative population study. That makes it a useful vocabulary for variation people already notice, and a poor measuring instrument. Any exact distribution percentage should be treated with suspicion, including ours.

What is more specific than a subtype page?

Anything that starts from an input belonging to you rather than a code shared with millions of people. Sixty-four buckets is still sixty-four buckets, so a page organised around letters cannot get below that resolution. The free 37-system chart engine starts from your own birth data, runs it through thirty-seven separate systems, and shows where those readings agree and where they contradict each other. No account, no payment. Given how you think, the disagreements will be the part you find worth looking at.

Keep going

If you want the version that is about you rather than about the category, it has to start from something that is yours. No account, nothing to pay, and given how you think, the disagreements will be the part worth looking at.
