Short answer: A free Bazi calculator can be perfectly accurate, and many are. Accuracy comes down to four things it either handles or quietly skips: the solar term that sets your month pillar, the two-hour branch boundary that sets your hour pillar, the day rollover at 23:00, and whether it corrects for the longitude of your birthplace. A calculator that never asked you which city you were born in cannot have done the last one.
Search for a Bazi calculator and you will find dozens, all free, all confident, and a fair number of them disagreeing with each other about your chart. That is unsettling the first time it happens, because a birth chart is supposed to be arithmetic. It is arithmetic. The disagreements come from four specific decisions, and once you know what they are you can check any tool in about a minute.
1What "accurate" actually means here
Two different things get called accuracy, and mixing them up is why these arguments go nowhere.
Construction is whether the eight characters are right. This is verifiable. Given the same birth moment and the same place, every correct tool must return the same four pillars. If two calculators differ, one of them is wrong, and you can find out which.
Interpretation is what those characters are said to mean. Schools genuinely differ here, and reasonable practitioners disagree. That is not an accuracy problem, it is a tradition problem, and no calculator settles it.
When people ask whether a free calculator is accurate, they almost always mean the first one. Good news: that part is testable.
2The four things a calculator has to get right
The solar term, not the lunar date
Your month pillar does not change on the first day of the lunar month. It changes at the solar term, which falls on a different date each year and at a specific hour of that day. A tool that shortcuts this by using the lunar calendar will hand the wrong month pillar to anyone born within a couple of days of a term boundary.
How to check: ask the tool to display which solar term your birth falls in. If it cannot tell you, it probably is not using them.
The hour branch and the 23:00 rollover
Each Earthly Branch covers two hours, and the Rat hour straddles midnight. Depending on the convention a tool follows, a birth at 23:30 belongs either to that day or to the next one. Both conventions exist in practice. What matters is that the tool picks one and tells you.
How to check: run your birth time, then run it again one hour earlier and one hour later. The hour pillar should change at the two-hour boundaries, not at random.
Longitude, not just time zone
A chart runs on local solar time. Time zones are political and wide: two cities in the same zone can differ by more than half an hour of true solar time. If the calculator asked only for a country, or for nothing at all, it applied a zone-wide approximation.
How to check: did it ask for your city? If not, that correction did not happen.
Historical daylight saving
Many countries ran daylight saving in decades when they no longer do, and Taiwan is one of them. A birth in a summer month in the 1950s or 1970s may be recorded one hour off. Serious tools carry a historical table for this. Most free ones do not.
How to check: if you were born in a country with a daylight-saving history and the tool never mentioned it, treat your hour pillar as provisional.
3A one-minute test for any calculator
You do not need to understand Bazi to run this.
Test one: the same input twice. Enter your details, note the eight characters, close the tab, and do it again. Identical output every time is the minimum bar. Anything that drifts is generating rather than calculating.
Test two: nudge the time. Move your birth time by two hours. The hour pillar must change. If the whole chart stays the same, the hour is decorative and any hour-based reading you get is noise.
Test three: nudge the date across a term. If you know a solar term near your birthday, try a date on each side of it. The month pillar should change. If it changes on the first of the month instead, the tool is using the lunar date.
Test four: compare two tools honestly. If two calculators disagree, do not average them. Find out which one asked for your birth city and which one can name your solar term. That usually settles it.
4When free is genuinely enough
Free is not a euphemism for worse. For building the chart, a well-made free calculator is exactly as correct as a paid one, because the arithmetic is the arithmetic.
Free is enough when you want to know your Day Master, see your five-element balance, and get oriented. That is a real and useful amount of information, and you should not pay for it.
Free stops being enough at a specific point: when you want the chart read as a whole rather than as a list of parts. A calculator can tell you that you have a Yang Water Day Master and heavy Wood. It will not tell you what that combination has been doing to your work life for the last three years, or which of your recurring patterns is structural and which is just this decade. That requires reading the relationships between the pillars, the ten-year luck cycle, and the annual layer together, consistently, in one document.
