As a child, what I wanted was to grow up and be a teacher.

Life had other plans.
I had my two children with me, and that was enough to keep going.

I gritted my teeth, cried when I had to,
and set out to turn things around with my own two hands.

Then one day it was a scent that stopped me,
and something finally opened.

I went back to school and picked up the dream I had started with,
and put the broken pieces back together.

That is how Hour Light began.

A place to pause and reflect

Getting to know yourself

People arrive with different questions about themselves and their circumstances. Hour Light offers a place to explore those questions at your own pace.

Use the ideas that help you think more clearly, and choose your next step in the context of your own life.

I built this platform so people could find their way back to themselves. — Ruby Wang

How the road actually went

I started in the beauty industry in 1991, straight out of school, and I have been on the floor of it ever since — hair first, then skin, then everything that comes with running a shop. Thirty-five years of standing beside people while they talk.

That is where the real training happened. People do not come to a salon only for their hair. They sit down, and after a while they tell you what is actually going on: the marriage, the child who will not speak to them, the job they cannot leave. I listened to that for decades before I had any framework for it.

Then one scent stopped me mid-shift, and I could not let it go. That was the beginning of the part I did not plan: going back to university in my forties, finishing a master's degree in health industry management, and finally having language for what I had been watching all those years.

Hour Light grew from those experiences into a platform for reflection. Its tools use traditional and symbolic frameworks to help people explore questions about themselves.

H.O.U.R.

The H.O.U.R. framework organizes reflection into four steps:

H — Hold
Stop and let yourself be held before anything is fixed.
O — Observe
See what is actually happening, without deciding it is a fault.
U — Understand
Consider the pattern in the context of your experience and circumstances.
R — Rise
Take one real step, chosen by you, not prescribed by us.

Three books, written at three different crossroads

Three published books in Traditional Chinese, each written at a point where something had to change — the numbers hidden in a lunar birthday, what the body says before the mind catches up, and what thirty-five years beside other people teaches you about yourself. English editions are not available yet.
