Whether that trait is supported or working against you

Your animal may not be the one you think
The Bazi year does not start on 1 January, and it does not start on Lunar New Year either. It starts at the solar term usually called the beginning of spring, which falls in early February. Anyone born in January or early February should check, because a lot of people have been telling themselves the wrong animal for years.
Your animal year is not automatically your worst year
There is a widespread idea that the year of your own animal is unlucky. What the chart structure actually describes is a year with the same branch as your year pillar, which increases intensity around whatever that branch already governs in your chart. That can be demanding. It is not a verdict, and for some charts it is a productive year.
4So is the zodiac useless?
No, and pretending otherwise would be its own kind of dishonesty.
The twelve animals are a real part of the system, they are how most people first meet it, and they carry genuine cultural meaning that has nothing to do with prediction. They are also an excellent memory device: twelve branches are hard to hold in your head, twelve animals are not.
The problem is not the animal. The problem is stopping there and then being disappointed that it did not describe you very well. It was never going to. You were reading one character and expecting eight.

Check your year boundary. If you were born in January or the first days of February, confirm which Bazi year you actually fall in. This changes the animal itself, so everything downstream depends on it.
Look at the balance, not the labels. Which of the five elements are heavy in your chart and which are thin says more about how you operate than any single character does.
